Los Angeles is in no short supply of eco-friendly recreational activities, especially with regard to farmers markets. There are 89 Certified Farmers Markets in Los Angeles County alone, among dozens of other non-certified markets.
Shopping at a Certified Farmer’s Market (CFM) guarantees that the produce being sold is grown organically by the farmers who are selling it. CFMs sell an array of products including humanely raised meats, farmstead cheeses, free-range eggs, flowers, and organic produce, among others.
Buying locally grown produce from farmers markets contributes to the continuation of sustainable agriculture and supports the local food system. It also minimizes the transportation required to ship produce from miles away to local grocery stores, therefore reducing the detrimental affect of fossil fuels and allowing farmers to pick the produce at the peak of its ripeness and nutritional value.
According to farmernet.com, the official website of Certified Farmers Markets, produce that are currently in season and freshest at farmers markets include: persimmons, pomegranates, walnuts, Chinese broccoli, brussel sprouts, mandarin oranges, tangerines, avocados, winter squash, green beans, spinach, beets, limes, Asian pears, honey, mushrooms, and grapes.
